Spyderco Tenacious Plain Edge Knife

It wasn’t a mistake that Spyderco Inc., named this knife the Tenacious. The knife is meant to be an everyday carry that will consistently perform the most difficult cutting tasks with ease. The Spyderco Tenacious was milled to be hard-working while comfortable to use for a prolonged period of time.

The company created this knife with extended use in mind. The stainless steel blade is a leaf shape with a flat edge from the spine to the tip. This makes the pocket knife perfect for a variety of activities. Everything about this knife screams dogged strength from the jimping on the lock that makes it quick to unlock on the fly to the spine that makes it slip-proof during performance.

The Spyderco Tenacious is the mid-size knife in a series of three. The Spyderco Ambitious is the small knife size, and the Spyderco Resilience is the large knife. The Tenacious is just right, and it will become the go-to knife for everyday activities as well as the one that goes along on camping trips or fishing expeditions as the clip-on, folding knife that’s used for backup and quick, detailed cutting.

Spyderco-Tenacious-bladeThe Blade

The Spyderco Tenacious G-10 has a 8Cr13Mov stainless steel blade. It’s thin at the very tip for intricate, detailed cutting. The 3.39″ blade thickens towards the middle and into the spine. Stainless steel is a great material for knives that are used every day. It’s resistant to rust and stays sharp for a long time. This blade is high-quality and according to most users, the knife has no wiggle or blade play when opened. This is essential for cutting and slicing since you don’t want to have any blade wiggle.

The blade has a large hole at the top for opening. It can be opened one-handed and clicks into place with a tight lock. The knife edge is extremely sharp directly out of the box. There’s no need to sharpen the knife before use. It can go from the box to your pocket without fuss. Some people have called the Spyderco Tenacious G-10 the working man’s blade.

Some people have reported that the blade needs to be sharpened after prolonged use, but it doesn’t take long for the blade to be brought back to the sharpness experienced out of the box. This is important because every blade needs to be sharpened occasionally after hard use, but the Tenacious was easily returned to its original sharpness.

Spyderco-Tenacious-handleThe Handle

Inside the black handle of the Tenacious’ G-10, there are steel liners that give the handle strength without added unnecessary weight. The Walker Linerlock has a jimped edge that makes for a comfortable yet non-slip grip. This is important for extended cutting jobs. Many people find the best thing about the knife is its handle. It’s lightweight yet feels solid in the hand during use. Any time you have a cutting activity ahead, you want a knife that will feel solid without becoming seemingly heavier over the length of the job. It won’t wear out your hand.

The four-way clip gives the knife versatility since it can be worn by both left-handed and right-handed people equally well. It allows the knife to be kept blade up or down depending on the preference of the user and whether they are right- or left-handed. These are important considerations since an everyday carry knife should be unobtrusive until ready to use then it should be simple to unclip and unlock.

The Pros

  • Easy to open quickly
  • Comfortable for prolonged use
  • Secure blade with no play
  • Very sharp immediately out of the box
  • Strong lock
  • Four-way clip

The Cons

  • Blade’s steel is average strength so it will require sharpening occasionally (not really a con but it I was hard-pressed to find any!)
  • Screws on the clip can become loose during extended wear

Insider Tip

If you’re looking for a knife for cutting boxes, think about using a box cutter instead. It’s cheaper and a replacement razor is cheaper than a replacement knife. The knife is great forcamping, hunting or fishing as well as common everyday tasks, but don’t use it for prolonged box cutting. That will ruin any blade.

So What’s the Verdict on the Spyderco Tenacious Plain Edge Knife?

For the price, the Spyderco Tenacious Plain Edged Knife is a great everyday carry knife. Overall, its sharp blade and comfortable handle make it convenient for extended use and detailed cutting as well as quick activities. Quality build and stays sharp extremely well. There’s good reason that so many people buy this pocket knife and leave excellent reviews online – this knife deserves every bit of it!

I think for the money, the tenacious is absolutely one of the best pocket knives out today. And while you said it wasn’t really a con, and I agree, I think the steel is perfectly adequate. Truth be told, for under $40, nothing beats this knife.

Thanks for stopping by Matt! You definitely can’t go wrong with the Tenacious. I’ve actually been carrying my Delica 4 around lately, but hey, I gotta give all my knives some time in the pocket!
