Spyderco Dragonfly G-10 Plain Edge Knife

The Spyderco Dragonfly G-10 pocket knife is a little knife that packs a large punch. The relatively small size of the knife at a blade length of 2.25″ and an overall length of 5.5″ is deceptive since the knife handles like its larger counterparts. The G-10 handle was created with the natural shape of the hand in mind, so it can be held comfortably by large and small hands with equal precision.

The Spyderco Dragonfly is perfect for true every day carrying since it can fit in the smallest of places. Like other Spyderco folding knives, the Dragonfly is made of quality steel which produces a sharp, strong blade. The G-10 foliage green handle has steel liners that give the handle heft and weight while making it sturdy.

The knife is perfect for that fifth pocket of the jeans. It’s unobtrusive until needed. This makes it the perfect tool to carry everywhere. Nobody will know it’s in a pocket until it’s required to perform a job, which it does with ease. The small, sharp blade makes it entirely controllable for detail work like whittling. It’s also the perfect beginning knife for anyone that hasn’t had much experience with pocket knives as well as for experienced users who can appreciate the control and size.

The blade of the Dragonfly is made of VG-10 steel. This ishigh-grade steel that holds an edge really well. The full-flat grind of the blade’s edge extends from the very tip to the choil, which has jimping so the knife doesn’t slip. This extends the length of the handle to make it a more comfortable grip. The top of the blade is jimped as well with small notches that make it a natural place to hold with the thumb when cutting.

Some users have talked about the surprisingly sharp blade. This is a vital part of the quality of VG-10 steel. While it can take some time and effort to grind the edge of the blade, once it’s sharpened, the edge can be as crisp and sharp as a razor or a scalpel. It’s perfect for point work as well as slicing or cutting work. In some knives, you can do one or the other, but not the Dragonfly.

The large hole in the blade of the knife makes it simple to open the knife one-handed, which is a big plus when using any folding pocket knife.

spyderco-dragonfly-handleThe Handle

The handle of the Dragonfly is much like the other handles on Spyderco knives. It’s made of G-10 material that is durable and sturdy with a frame so lightweight that the entire knife only weighs two ounces.

The steel liners inside the handle make it more durable and give the screws a place to adhere without creating added weight. The screws are removable so the knife can be broken down and reassembled for cleaning purposes.

The wire clip may look insubstantial, but people often talk about the shocking strength of the clip. The clip is small enough that it doesn’t impede the storage of the knife. It’s compact size makes it easy to keep the knife in out-of-the-way spaces like tiny pockets.

Pros of the Spyderco Dragonfly

  • Solid construction and heft
  • Sharpness of the steel
  • Strong clip
  • Lightweight
  • Great for a multitude of tasks

Cons of the Spyderco Dragonfly

  • Might be too sharp for younger users
  • Jimping can pull on fabrics

Insider Tip

A few users purchased this knife for a younger family member. While this may be the perfect size knife for a small hand, the blade is extremely sharp. Experienced users should be careful with the edge of the Dragonfly. It’s deceptively razor-like.

This is perfect for an adult, but might not be for a young person.

Verdict

The tiny size of the Spyderco Dragonfly makes it seem like the knife will be flimsy or unable to perform big cutting tasks, but the edge is shockingly sharp. It’s solidly constructed and doesn’t feel flimsy or cheap. The steel is a high-grade quality that makes the Dragonfly a great, cutting knife. If you’ve never purchased a knife because you’ve been worried about carrying one in full view on your belt, or worried about the bulge in clothing pockets, this diminutive dynamo is the perfect solution.

Very well done review and I agree with your opinion. I own this knife and has been my edc for about 18 months. VG-10 is excellent steel, although it does take some effort to sharpen it to the level it came from the factory. The clip is solid as is the lockup when opened. Absolutely no blade play whatsoever. The G10 is grippy even when wet. If I had any cons it would be that the edges of the liner and the Spyderco hole are rather sharp.
I have over 2 dozen folders and I do believe this knife to be my most prudent purchase. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the comment Mark! I personally would rather have a blade that was a bit harder to sharpen but holds it’s edge better. I also agree that the edges of the handle are a bit sharp – but I haven;t cut myself or anything with it.
