The Benchmade Mindset – “It’s not just a knife. It’s a Benchmade.” Wow … they must have great confidence in their knife craftsmanship! Benchmade has been producing world class cutlery for the past 2 decades and is always striving to produce superior products that outperform their peers. From everyday pocket knives to rescue, fire, military, and tactical uses … Benchmade has a knife for you.
The Benchmade company was originally started back in 1979 in California under the name “Bali-Song”, but then changed its name to the Pacific Cutlery Corporation in 1988. Then in 1990, the company relocated to Clackamas Oregon. Benchmade’s early knives mostly consisted of Bali-Song® knives and a combination of these and certain in-house processing methods. The company, like many knife companies., started out with almost no money and had to rely on second hand equipment and very limited resources. Benchmade however rose to the challenge and became a premier manufacturer of Balisong style knives, or butterfly knives, along with other types of folding pocket knives that carried them into the modern age. Benchmade’s original Bali-Song knife design was designed by Jody Samson.
Keeping It Local in Oregon
Just like many pocket knife manufacturers before them, Benchmade made the move to Oregon in 1996. The reason that many knife companies move here is due to Oregon’s relaxed knife laws, especially when it comes to switchblades and butterfly knives.
Benchmade historically produced around 90% of their knives right there in its Oregon facility, pretty much everything except for their Red Class product line, which was produced off-shore. As of 2010 however, Benchmade has ceased all off-shore production and makes 100% of their cutlery on U.S. soil … and is proud of it!
